Scratch DJ Academy - Miami Beach
Acclaimed Scratch DJ Academy Brings Its Beat To The Beach
Scratch DJ Academy, the world class DJ training facility and entertainment company currently taking the music industry by storm in New York and Los Angeles, is setting up shop in the country’s hottest late-night party city – South Beach. With classes currently underway, the winter semester beginning January 2006 and the kick-off of private lessons, the intimate, 800 square foot venue, located in the heart of Miami Beach’s nightclub district at 642 6th street, is a DJ’s dream, with 20 top notch turntables, 10 state of the art mixers, a diverse record library and an incredible sound system, offering the perfect backdrop for budding and experienced DJs.
Founded in 2002 in New York City by music pioneers Rob Principe, formerly of USA Network and Sony Online Ventures, the late Jam Master Jay of RUN DMC and 1996 Grammy and Tony nominee Reg E. Gaines, the company is dedicated to teaching the masses the dynamic art of DJ’ing. Having been recognized by some of the nation’s top news, business, music and fashion publications, with features and column items appearing in The New York Times, Fortune, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Mixer, The Source, Crains, Women’s Wear Daily, XXL, URB and more, Scratch DJ Academy has graduated over 5,000 students from its academies and has taught over 85,000 nationwide how to DJ. The medium’s popularity was noted by the New York Times in an August 8, 2004 article about Scratch, “Aspiring performers gravitate toward turntables the way an earlier generation gravitated toward guitars.…” Scratch’s copyrighted curriculum has thereby become all the rage with aspiring, amateur and established DJs, individuals looking for an exciting, new and entertaining pastime and businesses or corporations searching for the perfect unique celebration or teambuilding activity.
Principe, Scratch’s founder and CEO, expects the same for the Miami location, “Based on the success we’ve encountered in the three years since we opened in New York City and the tremendous response in the year since L.A.’s launch, coming to Miami was a no-brainer. This is a town of entertainment seekers and partiers; there’s no better place to spread our love and knowledge of this undeniable art form.”
Augmenting their Miami staff with the city’s top local DJs, such as Irie, Craze, Immortal, and Edgar V, Scratch sets out to accomplish their education mission through six week semesters catering to everyone from the completely clueless to the advanced mixer, as well as offering an array of marketing and event services including DJ booking, event production, experiential programming and music consulting.
A large part of Scratch’s success stems from their event services, having worked with high-profile clients such as, Pepsi, Nike, Nokia, Cingular, Volkswagen, Target, Lipton and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines on events such as the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament, Winter X-Games and Bonnaroo Music Festival, among others. With their impressive national network of over 300 professional and celebrity DJ’s who play all genres of music, Scratch is able to create and execute a wide range of programming for events, including its most popular activity, Scratch & Burn. This on-site proprietary program features DJ instruction stations where event goers get hands-on experience with the turntables and walk away with a CD of their mix. Other popular event programming consists of Digital Listening Stations, featuring prerecorded mixes from celebrity DJ talent and Pick & Play, interactive “DJ Karaoke” programming allowing guests to dig through crates of vinyl and challenge a DJ to mix the selected songs. Scratch also provides marketing and consulting services to help corporations utilize music as an effective platform for brand building. Services include: music programming, grassroots promotion, web content, program creation, brand licensing, product give-away, prize fulfillment and more.
